Anywhere But Here!

Creating a Web Page

Click on the FrontPage 2000 icon and open the program.

A new page opens up that looks like this

The cursor is blinking! Type something…Type the Title for your page…

Anywhere but Here!

Now using the same tools you use everyday when you use a word processor… center your text, change the color, and change the size.

In a smaller font, still centered type “ There are days when I feel the need to get away, and not just in my mind. I’d like to take you to some of the places I’d love to go…San Francisco, London, Japan, Paris

Now, bullet the names of the places and align left

How about inserting a picture…go to INSERT…Picture from File

Navigate to Program files\Microsoft Office\Office\Tutorial

Find the file for San Francisco

Highlight

Click OK

Add a few more the same way

Lets Hyperlink the icon to a site so you can learn a little more about the places you intend to visit.

Up in the Standard Toolbar you will see a picture that looks like the World on a paperclip.

Click on it

When it opens up you see a screen that looks like this

In the box at the bottom for the URL:

Type in the following address…http://www.a-london-guide.co.uk

Click OK

Now, before we preview our page to see if the link works we should save our page.

Go to FILE, SAVE AS, Desktop, My Documents

Where it says Page field in the bottom left you can click on change…this is what identifies the contents when displayed in the Web Browser

Next, set the Page Title to homepage

Click Save

Now preview your page by clicking on the PREVIEW Tab at the bottom of the FrontPage Window.

When you point to the London Icon, you should see a little hand and the address it is hyperlinked to…if you click on it you’re off to London…anywhere but here!

Creating a Web
(or a collection of pages
J)

On the file menu CLOSE the page you have open.

Now go to File, New, WEB

Highlight the ONE PAGE WEB

In the box to the left where it asks you to specify the location of your web, type…

C:\MyDocuments\MyWebs\Anywhere

Click OK

FrontPage creates a new web named Anywhere for you and to the left you can see the files and folders in your current web.

Click on the Navigation Icon to the left.

The Navigation window shows in pictures what the structure of your web looks like…kind of a graphic organizer.

Your homepage is indicated by a little house and in a minute you will import the page you have already done into your web. But first let’s add the other pages, one for each of the places we want to visit.

The easy way is to click on Homepage, hold down the control key and press N for new. Do this four times…and you have four new pages!

Title them…use the tab to move to each icon and type in the names of the pages, hit enter, then tab to the next box …London, Paris, Japan and San Francisco.

Now lets bring the page we already made into the web…

In the Navigation view click on homepage

A blank page opens up

Go to Insert…File

Now you have to navigate to the place where you stored that first page…the desktop

Click on the “Anywhere” file

Click on OPEN

Your page appears on the blank page

SAVE

It asked if you want to save the embedded files (those are the pictures you inserted) say OK

You will see them appear in your folder list…I usually click on each one and drag it into the image folder.

Let's connect one of our pages to the Homepage. How about going to London?

In the folder view double click on London

Lets put a picture on the page

Go back to that site you minimized earlier

Go to Landmarks…. Parliament…. enlarge the picture…. right click on the picture and SAVE AS…give your file a name and make sure you are saving it to the desktop.

Now we are ready to add it to our web.

Go to FILE…IMPORT

This window appears
Click on Add File
Go to the desktop and find your Picture of the Parliament.
Click OPEN
The file appears in the widow to the left.
Click OK
The picture appears in the folder list
Move it into the image folder

Now in front of you there is a blank page, the title of the page is LONDON.

Go to Insert…Picture…from From File and this box appears

Navigate to the Anywhere Folder

Click on the Parliament Gif

Click OK

In order to type  “A Visit to the British Parliament” we need to format the picture.

Go to Format…Position…

Click on left

Now you can type anything you want to the left.

Linking pages within your web…

From the folder view double click on index.htm to open your homepage.

Highlight the word London
This box opens up

In this case we will not be connecting to a URL but to a page in our web
Click on London.htm (your page)
London.htm appears in the URL box
Click OK

Now when you look at your page word London is a different color and underlined. This indicates that it is linked to another location.

You know enough now to go forth and build your own web!

Publishing Your Finished Web

Unless you have a place to actually publish your web to, you can read over these steps but don’t do them.

  Close all open pages

Go to File…Publish Web or click the Publish Web Button

This is where you will specify the location on the World Wide Web, or your district intranet to which you want to publish your web.

If you do not have one, by clicking on WPP’s you can locate and sign on with one.
