"I have to teach Reading, Math, and Writing I don't have time for computers!"

You don't have to add to your workload, just do the same things you've always done, only differently, and better.

Quick Tips
Instead of the students coming up to you every time they can't spell a word:

Leave one of your computers on at all times and open up a word processing program. When one of the students needs to check on the spelling of a word, have them go over to the computer, type in the word and hit spell check.

Leave the word up for the next person to see, just in case. You can even save the list at the end of the day and print it out at the end of the week. It might be a good source for spelling words!

How about "teching" up your Math practice?

Go to Programs, Accessories and open the NOTEPAD. Have students type in a problem (*means multiply). Position your notepad to the right of your screen by dragging the title bar where it says notepad.

Now go back to the Programs, Accessories and open the calculator. Position the calculator so you can see both it and the notepad. You are now multitasking!

By positioning the mouse cursor to the left of the equation on your notepad and pressing the bottom and dragging, you will highlight the equation. You have now selected text.

Press Control C to copy. Click on the calculator. ( which makes it the active window). Control V will Paste. Watch the Calculator! It automatically displays the answer to the problem. Another COPY, PASTE and you can put it back on the notepad.

Students can print out their work, or save it to a folder on the desktop where you can check it at your convenience.

How about that "MAGIC SQUARE"?

Practicing multiplication was never easier...open the word processor, go to TABLE, insert TABLE. Type in the number of columns you wish to use in your table. (6 for practicing sixes, 8 for practicing eights and so on) So you want to go all the way to 6 x 12? Then ask for 12 rows. I only went to 5 in the table below.

1 2 3 4 5 6
2 4 * * * *
3 6 * * * *
4 8 * * * *
5 * * * * *

Remember Venn Diagrams?

How about comparing and contrasting two characters in a story...open a page in your word processor. Go to VIEW , toolbars, and select the DRAWING toolbar. On the drawing toolbar, select auto shapes, basic shapes and the circle.

Draw two circles, one on top of the other. You'll notice that you can not see the entire circle that is in the back. On the drawing toolbar, select the paint can (FILL) and select NO FILL.  The circle now is transparent. Now insert your text, add color, clip art, etc.

Students can print out their diagram or save it in their electronic portfolio.

Pictures, Pictures

Rebuses can be a lot of fun with Microsoft Word. Have students copy down a list of compound words and turn them into picture puzzles. Student can use clip art images to create their rebuses. This can be a group project or an individual project. Students can then exchange their rebuses and decipher each others Some examples include:

+ = , or + =, or + =

Parts of Speech only better!

Here's a way to practice the parts of speech and word processing all in one.  On a piece of poster board, write a content rich paragraph and place it near the computer. Ask the students to open up the word processor and type the paragraph (keyboarding practice).

Now demonstrate the skill you specify, for example:

Students can save it to an assignment folder on the desktop, or they can personalize their own folder and start their very own electronic portfolio. Great for parent conferences!

Middle School Idea

An idea for using Word 2000 in a middle school classroom is to post a list of subject specific vocabulary words and create a cloze exercise (a word processed document where the vocabulary words have been systematically deleted from the text). Have students scroll down and type the correct word in each blank, print the document, and turn it in for a grade

Special Education idea

In the Special Education classroom have students scroll down to the middle of a blank word processing document page. Instruct them to make a line across the page using the key next to the number 0. Tell them they will use the animal category of clip art. Give them an instruction such as: Place all of the "Wild Animals" under the line, and all of the "Domestic Animals" on top of  the line. You can have all of the clip art animals at the bottom of the page already so all they have to do is click and drag...or let them go to clip art themselves.

Using PowerPoint /Producer and Photo Story

NOTE:

You can download Producer and Photo Story for free from Microsoft

Elementary Ideas

A great way to show Addition of several numbers is to use PowerPoint.  You can even use your digital camera to put a picture of the student on the slide before their problem. Click here to see an example. PowerPointAddition
Try this with the steps to division also!

Producer does many of the same things as Power Point. When you open the program it asks if you have a video to import. Then it asks if you have a Power Point to import. You begin to run the video, and sync the Power Point Slides to  the video.

Example: One of my students read the book Click, Clack, Moo while we video taped her. The Power Point slides where the text on each of the pages of the book. Students can follow along as you read. I

Above is an example of an earthquake project done by two fifth-graders in California.

Photo Story is so very simple and takes minutes to do a show with digital photos. When the program opens it asks you to import your pictures. Next you import your music, create a title slide if you want one and it automatically syncs the music and the photos and includes all the transitions!

This is great for open house, to document a project so students the following year will understand a process, or for photo journals of field trips.

Middle School Idea

Students can use PowerPoint to practice persuasive writing. They choose a product such as POW laundry detergent and try to persuade their classmates to buy it.

Special Education

You can use PowerPoint to build a story. This is a great project for one computer classrooms. You need to put a title slide and add additional slides. On the second slide ask 4 questions. On the third slide the student will answer the first question, and personalize the slide to go with the story. On the fourth slide the next student will answer a question and so on until the story is complete. You can have as many slides as you have questions or students! Click on the down arrows to advance the slides.

Excel

Elementary or Middle School Idea

Everyone likes to comparison shop these days. Why not do the same in your classroom.? Have your students construct a simple spreadsheet with headings for item, price and where it can be purchased. Have them use the Internet to find items like books ( http://www.amazon.com and http://www.barnesandnoble.com ), or toys ( http://www.etoys.com and http://www.toysrus.com )

More to come... Sharon
