The techniques I will show you can be applied to ANY content area, and you can go as far as you want to develop the activity…the only thing stopping you is your own creativity and imagination.

Interactive PowerPoint

Most of you know PowerPoint as a linear application…you start at the beginning and play on through to the end.

Interactive PowerPoint can help you create a totally controlled Internet experience within a unit of study that you develop!

Below you will find a tutorial that will help you construct your project. You may choose your own content, and add as many slides as you need…HAVE FUN with it!

The "HOW TO" Using PowerPoint

When you click on the icon to open PowerPoint, a tips box is the first thing you will see.

X out of the box.

You are next asked if you would like to open a presentation you have saved, or start a new one.

You will be starting a "BLANk" one. Now we are ready to begin…

First you are prompted to select a Title slide for your presentation, notice that the computer has already highlighted one for you.

Click on OKAY to select the slide layout you want.

Click in the box and start to type…when you are finished, click outside the box…

You may edit what you have typed at any time by reclicking in the same spot

You may change the background of your slide by doing any of the following:

Go to FORMAT

…APPLY DESIGN,

Highlight the design you want and APPLY

OR

Go to FORMAT …BACKGROUND at the bottom you will see a white scroll down box that gives you the option of selecting many different colors for a background or fill effects, click on fill effects, than the Picture Tab. Browse for the picture you have in a file or on your desktop

You are ready to add your second slide, it will be a Table of Contents Slide that contains topics linked to specific slides in your presentation.

Go to INSERT new slide

The Second layout, The Bulleted List slide is the one you want.

Notice when the slide comes up you need to apply a new background...go through the steps as before, but this time open the white scroll down box and select colors...then after you select a color, click APPLY...do not select APPLY TO ALL unless you want all of the slides to be the same color.

Type the title of your presentation…I have chosen "The Rainforest"

This will be our table of contents card

Under the title, use the bulleted list format to type the subtopics such as, Animals of the Rainforest, Plants of the Rainforest, etc.

You may add clip art by going to INSERT, PICTURE, CLIP ART (if you have save a picture from the WEB, to your DESKTOP, you would go to PICTURE, FILE, DESKTOP, locate your picture and INSERT it into the slide)

We will link each subtopic to a card containing that information.

First you need to create a card in your stack with the same title as the subtopics you have listed on your Table of Contents Card.

So for 5 subtopics you have 5 new cards in the show

Next you have to link the subtopic to the card you created.

Highlight the subtopic

Click on the little world on a paperclip icon on your toolbar...you are going to hyperlink this title to another slide in this presentation.

This box appears

On the left hand side, click on Place in this document.

Select the card with the correct title...#3 Description of a Rainforest, and click OK...it is now connected to the table of contents slide

Now starting on the first slide, go to the little movie screen icon in the bottom left hand corner, start the show. When the table of contents slide comes up, click on "What is a Rainforest"…you should go directly to that card…Connect the other 4 cards.

Notice that the colors have changed when you hyperlinked the cards. You can change the colors for the actions by going to FORMAT...SLIDE DESIGN...COLOR SCHEMES...and down at the bottom select EDIT COLOR SCHEMES

Now lets fill in a card and link it to the Internet!

Go to the Table of Contents card, click on the Animals of the Rainforest

You should now be on that card…we are going to look for information about rainforest animals to add to that card

Minimize your PowerPoint by clicking on the minus sign in the top right hand corner, now it is sitting on the toolbar at the bottom, to get it back just click on it

Go to the Internet, http://www.yahooligans.com

Search for rainforest

Look for a hit on rainforest animals

Go to that site, is there a picture you could copy for your card

To copy a picture, right click on the picture and select copy, then minimize the screen and bring up your PowerPoint slide and right click COPY

Or…right click and select SAVE AS, and save the picture to your desktop

Minimize, bring up your slide, go to INSERT, PICTURE,FILE and look for it on your desktop, INSERT

Now what questions do we want to ask, type them on your slide…Students will answer the questions by clicking on the picture and going to the web page with that information

Hyperlinking the Picture to a Web Page

Click on the picture to select it

Click on the Link tool in the tool bar

Remember that the web page you were using is sitting on the toolbar at the bottom…click on it to open

Go up to the URL box (the one that contains the address) and highlight the address of the Web Page

Right click select copy

Minimize the web page

The address magically appears in the top box of the link tool window

Text is linked the same way, just highlight the text you want to link

Open the link tool window

Open the web page you want to link

Highlight the URL

Copy

Minimize the window

And the address appears in the link box!

Now do the other cards and you have a WONDERFUL Internet study that is done by the student in a "controlled" environment!

Adding A Button to get you back to your Table of Contents Card

Down at the bottom corner of the screen on the toolbar, go to AUTOSHAPES, ACTION BUTTONS

Select the little house button, to indicate the home slide

Move your cursor onto the slide and click where you want the button

Don’t worry about the size of the button, you can adjust the size and color

Once you click a screen comes up asking which slide you want to connect to

Scroll down to SLIDE and the next box comes up

Select Slide 2 and click ok

Connect all of your slides back to your table of contents slide the same way

After you click OK you can change the look of your button, you can do this by right clicking on the symbol and going to format shape... but remember...

Buttons and Hyperlinks do not work unless the PowerPoint is in SHOW
