Tic Tac Toe
The Tic Tac Toe Grid is constructed using the line drawing tool.
Using hyperlinked clip art, themed to an area of study, it’s a fun way for students to review a topic or build background knowledge before starting a new unit. HOW TO…PLAY / HOW TO CONSTRUCT
HOW TO…PLAY
Students open the activity, either from a disc, or from a folder on a desktop. This is what they see when they open the activity…

Students take a square, by answering the question posed. If they don’t know the answer, they can click on the related graphic for help. The graphic is hyperlinked to a website containing the information needed.
Of course…they have to select the correct graphic…:)
If they capture the square, they change the color of the text to one they have selected…one student who has chosen to be “X” might change all of their squares to RED.
Directions on how to construct the TIC TAC TOE activity…
Go to VIEW, TOOLBARS and click on DRAWING to access this toolbar.

NOTE: you can click on the bar and drag it to the bottom of the page.
The line tool you will need is indicated using the red arrow. Select the line tool by clicking on it.
When you click on the line tool, the following box appears.

Click in the box where you want to draw your first line, and then draw the line.
Notice that the box will not allow you to draw the lines as long as you would like. You can resize the box by clicking on the corner and dragging to the desired size.

Once you have the first line done, highlight the line by clicking on it (a little circle will appear at either end), then you can right click on that line. Select Copy, and then select Paste. Then drag the line where you would like it to go…this makes sure both lines are the same size.

Draw the horizontal lines the same way. Once you have all 4 line where you want them you need to make sure they are grouped together as one object so that they won’t move around on you.
To do this, hold down the shift key and click on each line. When they are all highlighted go to DRAW (down at the bottom), and GROUP.

SAVE your work after each step!
NOW you are ready to add your questions.
You can use ANY CONTENT, you don’t have to hyperlink to the web, you can keep it simple and stop after the questions… for example:
Math problems
Dates in History
Famous people
Elements (H2O)
Then once you have the board and questions, just print it out and make an answer key for the students.
If you want to hyperlink it to the web…here are the next steps.
Adding questions to the boxes.
Once again, go to the DRAWING toolbar and select the icon with the little letter A inside. Click in the box where you want to start tying. When you do your screen will look like this…

You can resize the box by clicking on the box then placing the cursor over the middle of the box until the double sided arrow appears, then click and drag.

You can change the font size and color by selecting all of the text in the box and select the type, size and color from the toolbar at the top of your screen.

Save your work.
Now repeat the steps until you have all of the information you want to type in each box.

If you want to hyperlink, either the text or a graphic, follow the next steps.
To hyperlink the text….
First…go to the website that contains the information you want. Minimize the webpage so it is sitting on the bottom of the screen. (You do this by selecting the small box with the minus sign that sits in the top right hand corner of the webpage.

Now with the webpage minimized, go back to your TIC TAC TOE document.
Select the text you want to hyperlink, and up in the toolbar, select the WORLD icon. The following screen opens up…then open your webpage, and minimize it again…the address or URL is now in the address section of the Insert Hyperlink box. Hit ok and close the box.

Follow these steps for all of the text you wish to connect to the web.
If you want to hyperlink a graphic…it works the same way. First lets insert a graphic.
Go to Insert, Picture, Clip Art

In the lower right corner of your screen is the link to the online database of Microsoft clip art….

When the window opens, select a search term….

Put a check in the box for every item you want to download…and when you have all you want, go to the left of the screen and click on Download.

Save it to your computer

It will ask where you want to save it, save it in the Microsoft Office Clip Art File. Hit OK and then OPEN

Select the lionfish, and Copy.

Then go back to your document and paste.
The picture will automatically appear in one size in the top left corner. Right click on the picture and go to format picture.

Set your SIZE and then go to LAYOUT…select ”in front of text”…this allows you to move the item anywhere on the page.

Move the graphic to where you would like it to be (however, by clicking on it again you can move it anytime). While it is still selected (little circles around it), hyperlink it. Select the World icon, when the box appears, open the webpage about the lionfish, minimize the page, and once again the URL appears in the address box.

Do the same for all graphics. You can then move them all to the bottom of the page if you would like students to use them only if they need help to answer the question.
To change the colors of text when a student gets the answer correct, just highlight the text, and change the color using the tool at the top of the screen or the tool on the Drawing bar.

Save your activities on the desktop or a disk. Keep one copy as a backup in a file for yourself. When students open the file have them do a SAVE AS, and put their name…and save it to a folder you have on the desktop for that activity. This way every pair of students can use the same original file.
When you want to look at the work, just save the entire file to a disk and take it home to look at it…doesn’t weigh as much as a stack of papers does it?
